Maria das Dores Conceição, known as Dona Maria de Marumbá , was born shortly after the proclamation of the Golden Law signed by Princess Isabel, daughter of Dom Pedro II. But despite the law already in force, unfortunately his parents still received treatment from slaves. In the early 1940s, she moved to Santo Amaro de Ipitanga (old name given to the current city of Lauro de Freitas) and started to work hard to support her family.
She used to travel on the back of a donkey to Salvador, where she sold her manioc flour and delicious beijus at the São Joaquim fair, a long and tiring daily journey. She also earned money washing military uniforms on the Ipitanga River, in addition to practicing as a healer using medicinal herbs, knowledge she acquired from her family members.
In all, Dona Maria had 13 children, in her youth she loved to dance Samba de Roda and was very devoted to Candomblé by which she was instructed by her parents, and this was the life of the oldest woman living in Lauro de Freitas, who left us in 2007, being well loved by everyone in her community and being considered an example of life to be followed and a “living memory” of Lauro de Freitas at the beginning of the last century.
