Block Afro Bankoma was born in Terreiro São Jorge Filho da Goméia , today under the leadership of Mameto Kamurici , and took to the streets for the first time in 2000, exhibiting the results of art education and solidarity economy workshops that were being developed in the community of Portão, a mostly black neighborhood located in the municipality of Lauro de Freitas.

The music, instruments, dance, props and clothing produced in the workshops were presented to the community for the first time in 2000, during the micareta of Portão, bringing together 700 components, showing the joy and African tradition of all Candomblé nations. Bankoma , a word of Bantu origin, means “people gathered in a party”, which encourages regular activities, strengthening identities , valuing black culture and raising community self-esteem, bringing perspectives of representation and social participation to traditional communities.

The Banda Bankoma animates and moves the Bloco Afro Bankoma in two days of parade in the Carnival of Salvador, making 3,500 revelers dance to the sound of a percussive base that commands strings, wind and voice. The sound is a journey through African musicality in the world that has the sounds of Bahia as its starting point. The third day of the parade is held in the city of origin, the municipality of Lauro de Freitas. Before leaving, Bankoma thanks and embraces the neighborhood of Portão with a stringless parade, saying goodbye to Carnival and the community.
